Volodymyr Yosypovych Levytskyi

Volodymyr Yosypovych Levytskyi (December 31, 1872, Ternopil – July 13, 1956, Lviv) was a prominent Ukrainian mathematician, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor at Lviv University, and a full member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society (SSS).

Biography and early years

Volodymyr Levytskyy was born in Ternopil to Joseph Levytskyy, a high-ranking court official, and Seraphima Ilevych. His great-grandfather, Father Heorhii Levytskyi, was a priest and a close relative of Cardinal Mykhailo Levytskyi. His grandfather, Stefan Levytsky, was also a priest. The family had four sons: Roman, Marian, Volodymyr, and Julian. Roman became a lawyer, Marian died at a young age, and Julian became a historian and worked as a principal at a Ukrainian gymnasium in Ternopil.

Volodymyr received his primary education in Zolochiv, where the family lived after his mother’s death. He attended a public school and a gymnasium there. In 1886, he continued his studies at the Ternopil Gymnasium, where

His interest in mathematics was encouraged by his teachers, including the headmaster, Dr. Dnistriansky, and Professor Pleshkevych. In 1889, the family moved to Lviv, where Volodymyr graduated with honors from the Polish-language Franz Josef Gymnasium.

Education and scientific activity

In 1890 Levytsky entered the Faculty of Philosophy at Lviv University. In 1894, he published his first scientific work in Ukrainian, On Symmetric Expressions of Functions Modulo m, which was a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian mathematical terminology. In 1895, he passed the exam to become a secondary school mathematics and physics teacher. In 1901, he earned a doctorate in philosophy from Lviv University, after which he spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the Universities of Berlin and Göttingen.

After returning to Lviv, Levytsky taught mathematics at public and private gymnasiums in Lviv and Ternopil. Due to political circumstances, Ukrainians were not allowed to work in universities, so in 1920-1925 he taught mathematics at the Secret Ukrainian University in Lviv. After the Second World War, in 1939, Levytsky began working at Lviv University, where he participated in the organization of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics. In 1940, he was promoted to the rank of professor.

Scientific achievements and contributions

Volodymyr Levytsky is the author of about 100 scientific papers, as well as many popular science articles and translations. He wrote in Ukrainian, Polish, German, French, English, and Spanish. His main area of research interest was the theory of analytic functions. He also studied the theory of elliptic modular functions, continuous fractions, interpolation formulas, properties of power series, differential equations, mathematical physics, geometry, and astronomy.

Levytsky made a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian mathematical terminology. He was one of the founders and the first scribe of the Ukrainian sports society Sokil, as well as the secretary of the Ukrainian Pedagogical Society. As a full member of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences, he edited the “Collection of Works” and “Messages” of the Mathematical, Natural History and Medical Section of the National Academy of Sciences.

Public activity and personal life

In addition to his scientific work, Levytsky was actively involved in public work. He was a member of many Ukrainian organizations aimed at developing education and science. His activities contributed to the popularization of mathematics among Ukrainian youth and to raising the level of mathematical education in Ukraine.

Volodymyr Levytsky was married and had children. His family supported him in his scientific and public activities. Despite difficult political circumstances, he remained true to his principles and worked for the benefit of Ukrainian science and education.

Last years and legacy

Volodymyr Levytskyi died on July 13, 1956, in Lviv. He was buried at Lychakiv Cemetery. His scientific legacy continues to influence the development of mathematics in Ukraine. His

works and achievements remain important for the development of mathematical science and the formation of Ukrainian scientific terminology. Levitsky played a key role in the formation of the Ukrainian school of mathematics, which allowed future generations of scientists to continue his work.

Scientific works as a basis for further research

Levitsky’s work covers a wide range of mathematical disciplines, including the theory of analytic functions, modular functions, differential equations, interpolation methods, and mathematical physics. His research in power series and continuous fractions has found applications in modern numerical methods and computational mathematics.

His multifaceted activities also included the popularization of mathematics among young people. As the editor of numerous publications of the Shevchenko Scientific Society (SSS), he introduced new ideas and helped to disseminate them among Ukrainian scientists and students.

Contribution to mathematical terminology

One of the most important aspects of Levytsky’s legacy is his work on the creation and implementation of Ukrainian mathematical terminology. His experience as a translator and author of scientific papers in Ukrainian significantly influenced the formation of terms that have become the standard for Ukrainian mathematical texts.

Public activity and national consciousness

Outside of academia, Levytsky was an active participant in public life. As one of the founders of the Sokil Society, he was engaged in the development of physical culture among Ukrainians. During difficult periods of national oppression, he remained faithful to the ideals of the Ukrainian liberation movement.

Even while teaching at the Secret Ukrainian University (1921-1925), Volodymyr Levytsky continued to develop the ideas of Ukrainian science and supported the struggle for the right of Ukrainians to be educated in their native language.

Memory and recognition

The commemoration of Volodymyr Levytsky continues in modern Ukraine. Educational and research institutions are named after him, and his works are part of courses in the history of mathematics. Conferences dedicated to his contribution to science are held in Lviv and Ternopil.

His grave at the Lychakiv Cemetery has become a place of pilgrimage for students, teachers, and researchers who wish to pay tribute to the great mathematician.

Concluding remarks

Volodymyr Levytsky remains one of the most prominent figures in the history of Ukrainian science. His life is an example of dedication and tireless work for the development of science and culture. His legacy inspires new generations of Ukrainian mathematicians and public figures, demonstrating that science is not only a tool of knowledge, but also a way to serve your people.
