Education

Yuriy Butusov graduated from the Institute of International Relations of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv with a degree in international law.

Family.

Yuriy is married to Daria Butusova. The couple has three daughters: Bogdana, Eva and Veronika.

Career

The beginning of his career

Yuriy Butusov began his journalistic career in 2000, working for the Kyivski Vedomosti newspaper. Since 2003, he has been a columnist for the Dzerkalo Tyzhnia newspaper.

“Censor.NET”

In 2004, Yuriy founded and became the editor-in-chief of the online publication Censor.NET. The publication quickly gained popularity, in particular due to its coverage of the Orange Revolution. “Censor.NET is known for its emotional and incisive reporting, especially on corruption and the war in Donbas.

Other projects

Yuriy has also produced feature films. In 2005 he wrote the screenplay for the film Orange Sky, and in 2008 he produced the film Illusion of Fear based on the novel by Oleksandr Turchynov.

Political activity

In 2007, Butusov headed the media holding of the Socialist Party of Ukraine, publishing the party newspaper Tovarysh. During the V convocation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, he was an assistant to MP Yaroslav Mendus.

In 2014-2016, Yuriy was a member of the governmental selection commissions that nominated candidates for the positions of heads of the NABU and the National Agency for Finding, Tracing and Management of Assets Derived from Corruption.

In December 2020, Yuriy became a freelance advisor to Defense Minister Andriy Taran, but resigned on May 17, 2021.

Public activities

Mr. Butusov is the founder of several non-governmental organizations, such as the Free Information Agency, the Business Cooperation Council, and the All-Ukrainian Foundation for Strengthening National Security.

Awards and recognitions

  • In 2015, he was awarded the title of “Person of the Year” in the nomination “Internet Media of the Year”.
  • National award “Person of the Year 2014” in the nomination “Internet Media of the Year”.

Compromising material

Yuriy Butusov was accused by his fellow journalists of working for certain politicians and having ties to criminal authorities. In particular, journalists Volodymyr Boiko and Viacheslav Pikhovshek claimed that Butusov worked for the Batkivshchyna party and had ties to the Kyiv criminal underworld.

Journalistic activity

Yuriy Butusov writes about the internal political situation in Ukraine, paying great attention to the war in Donbas, corruption scandals, problems of election processes and activities of various political figures. He is the author of a series of essays on the events of the Revolution of Dignity.
