Stepan Giga: date of birth and native village

Stepan Petrovich Giga was born on November 16, 1959, in the picturesque Transcarpathian village of Bilky, Irshava District (now Khust District), Transcarpathian Region. He grew up in a simple working-class family: his father worked as a stoker, his mother at a factory. From early childhood, the boy showed a remarkable interest in music and singing, which later determined his entire destiny.

How old is Stepan Giza?

As of November 2025, Stepan Giza was 66 years old. Despite his advanced age, the artist remained at the peak of his popularity and continued to actively perform in concerts. The artist passed away on December 12, 2025, in Lviv.

Stepan Giga’s childhood: first music lessons

During his school years, Stepan took vocal and accordion lessons from local music teacher Mykhailo Kopynets, who was the first to recognize the boy’s talent and support his musical aspirations. Starting in 7th grade, young Giga became a member of the Transcarpathian ensemble “Zeleni Karpaty,” where he played the accordion and sang. Later, he even became the leader of this group.

The path through rejection: four attempts at admission

The road to professional music was not easy. Stepan failed to enter the Uzhhorod Music College three times — after the 8th, 9th, and 10th grades. Between attempts, he worked:

  • Mechanic at a local agricultural machinery company
  • Truck driver

After school, Stepan joined the construction troops, where he became part of the military orchestra—an invaluable experience. Only after the army, on his fourth attempt, did he manage to enter music school. His talent was so obvious that he completed a 4-year course as an external student in 3 years (1980–1983).

Kyiv Conservatory: academic school

In 1983, Stepan Giga enrolled in the vocal department of the Kyiv State Conservatory (now the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine). He studied under the renowned teacher Professor Kostyantyn Ognev (People’s Artist of Ukraine), who gave him a classical vocal training.

Stepan Giga’s voice is a lyrical tenor with a range of three octaves, allowing him to sing live without losing quality for decades.

While studying in Kyiv, Stepan became:

  • Soloist of the popular synth band “Stozhary” (affiliated with the Chernihiv Philharmonic)
  • Soloist of the conservatory’s opera studio

Return to Transcarpathia

Despite an offer to become a soloist with the National Opera of Ukraine, in 1988 Stepan Giga made an unexpected decision — to return to his native Transcarpathia and become a soloist with the Transcarpathian Regional Philharmonic. As he himself explained:

“I returned to Transcarpathia because I feel better in my native environment… everyone is rushing to the capital, but who will work in the periphery, especially since in terms of art, it is not so bad, and in some ways it can even surpass the capital.”

Stepan Giga’s creative career: from vocal-instrumental ensemble to solo concerts

Music groups (1970–1991)

Stepan Giga’s creative development took place through his participation in various groups:

  • “Green Carpathians” (from 7th grade to the end of music school) — the first music school
  • Stozhary (1980s) — a popular synth band affiliated with the Chernihiv Philharmonic Society
  • Beskid (1989–1991) — a jazz-rock band created by Giga himself at the Transcarpathian Philharmonic Society

Start of solo career (1991)

After the breakup of Beskid in 1991, Stepan Giga was left without a job. This prompted him to take a risky but fateful step — to start a solo career. In the same year, he founded his own recording studio, GIGARecords, which allowed him to be independent of producers and fully control the creative process.
