Childhood and family

Iosyp Slipyj was born into a large family. His father was Ivan Kobernytsky-Slipyj and his mother was Anastasia Dychkovska.


Joseph was highly educated in Europe. He studied in Lviv and Innsbruck, and defended his doctorate in Rome.

From 1926, Josyf Slipyj headed the seminary and theological academy in Lviv. He was ordained a priest by Metropolitan A. Sheptytsky and was his closest associate for more than 20 years. On November 1, 1944, Josyf Slipyj became Metropolitan of Galicia.

Josyf Slipyj was a prominent theologian and head of the Greek Catholic Church. He spent almost 20 years in Soviet camps. More than 10 volumes of his works were published in Rome.
