ToggleThe path to Apple
Jony Ive was born on February 27, 1967 in Chingford, London. Since childhood, he was fascinated by design, which was probably influenced by his father, who worked as a teacher of crafts. Jony studied design at Newcastle Polytechnic (now Northumbria University).
In 1992, Ive joined Apple when the company was in a difficult financial situation. But his work began to bear fruit after the return of Steve Jobs in 1997. Together they created iconic products: the iMac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad.
Role in the creation of Apple Watch
The idea of creating a smartwatch was born in the company in the early 2010s. Ive was convinced that smartwatches should be more than just a technical gadget. The designer said that people agree to wear the same smartphones, but everyone should have a unique watch. He saw a device that combines functionality and aesthetics. And Jonathan Ive succeeded – Apple Watch has become a technological product and a stylistic symbol that meets the requirements of modern fashion. Advances in Apple Watch design
- Versatility. Ive wanted to create a watch that would suit any style – from sporty to office. To this end, they developed interchangeable straps that can be quickly replaced. The device is available in several sizes and case materials: steel, aluminum, and titanium.
- Aesthetics and minimalism. Apple’s smartwatch is one of the first to combine technology and design. The focus is on an intuitive interface. Ive decided to use minimalism (simple shapes and clear lines).
- Innovations. In addition to aesthetics, Apple Watch contains innovative technologies. Taptic Engine is a system that senses feedback from the watch by touch and provides tactile notifications. Digital Crown is a round wheel that allows users to scroll, zoom, or select interface elements without touching the screen.
Why Jony Ive left Apple
In 2019, Jony Ive announced his resignation from Apple to start his own design company, LoveFrom. Although he no longer works for Apple, his influence on the company has remained forever. Ive and his new studio signed a contract and continued to advise the corporation’s designers until 2022.
Jony Ive’s legacy
The Apple Watch is just one of the many products to which Jony applied his design philosophy. At Apple, he designed the iPhone and iMac and became the most influential designer of his time. He also participated in the design of the Apple campus in Cupertino, California.

Jony Ive is a designer whose contribution to the look of modern technology is hard to overestimate. Thanks to his work, the Apple Watch has become not only a functional device, but also a part of a culture that combines technology with fashion and aesthetics. His influence on Apple will undoubtedly remain unforgettable.
